Why does my AGA boiling plate lose heat so fast?

The plate draws on stored heat, and if the core temperature is low or the lid is often left open, it recovers slowly. A thermostat or heat source problem may be involved. We check the core temperature and controls.

AGA Cooktops: What We Check First

The cooking surface on an AGA depends on the model. A traditional AGA has two large cast-iron hotplates, usually a hotter boiling plate and a cooler simmering plate, each covered by a heavy insulated lid when not in use. They draw heat from the same core as the ovens, so they are always warm. Conventional AGA range cookers have gas burners or induction zones that work like other modern cooktops.

Built-In Cooktops in Rural Kitchens

Some remodeled farmhouse kitchens and newer rural homes here have a counter-mounted cooktop over cabinets. Electric models, coil or glass-top, usually fail at an element, a limiter or the switch behind a knob. Gas cooktops, often running on propane in the country, give trouble at the igniters and spark module, especially after a boilover.

Dry any spills around the knobs and burners with the cooktop off and cool, and reseat the burner caps. Check the breaker, since storms can trip it. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your propane supplier or 911; never work on the supply line.
