Why does my Smeg gas burner go out as soon as I let go of the knob?

On models with flame-failure protection, you have to hold the knob in for several seconds so the thermocouple heats up and holds the valve open. If it still goes out after a proper hold, the thermocouple may be dirty, out of position or failed. That is a safety part, so it should be replaced rather than bypassed.

A burner on our propane cooktop near Peachland keeps clicking. What causes that?

Moisture from a spill or a misaligned cap is the most common reason, and drying the burner often fixes it. If clicking continues, the spark switch or module may be failing. We can test and replace the faulty part.

Smeg Cooktops: What We Check First

The gas units use spark ignition from a shared module, with a small switch behind each knob that triggers the spark. Many Smeg gas hobs also carry flame-failure devices, which use a thermocouple beside each burner to hold the gas valve open only while a flame is present. Induction models rely on a power board, cooling fans and coil sensors under the glass.

Built-In Cooktops in Rural Kitchens

Some remodeled farmhouse kitchens and newer rural homes here have a counter-mounted cooktop over cabinets. Electric models, coil or glass-top, usually fail at an element, a limiter or the switch behind a knob. Gas cooktops, often running on propane in the country, give trouble at the igniters and spark module, especially after a boilover.

Dry any spills around the knobs and burners with the cooktop off and cool, and reseat the burner caps. Check the breaker, since storms can trip it. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your propane supplier or 911; never work on the supply line.
