A running motor with weak suction usually points to a clogged filter, a dirty blower wheel, or a restriction in the duct or wall cap. We check each of those before suggesting a motor replacement. JennAir's cooktops are where the brand's downdraft history shows most. Many models pair gas, electric radiant or induction burners with a vent that either sits flush between the burners or rises out of the counter at the back. Under the counter, a blower motor pulls air through a grease filter and pushes it through a duct to the outside. Other JennAir cooktops are designed to work with an overhead hood and have no vent at all.

Built-In Cooktops in Rural Kitchens

Some remodeled farmhouse kitchens and newer rural homes here have a counter-mounted cooktop over cabinets. Electric models, coil or glass-top, usually fail at an element, a limiter or the switch behind a knob. Gas cooktops, often running on propane in the country, give trouble at the igniters and spark module, especially after a boilover.

Dry any spills around the knobs and burners with the cooktop off and cool, and reseat the burner caps. Check the breaker, since storms can trip it. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your propane supplier or 911; never work on the supply line.
