Many are push-to-open with handleless doors that blend into the kitchen or a bar area. They rely on precise electronic control and fan-driven airflow to hold each zone steady. Some models also include a small charcoal filter to keep the air inside the cabinet fresh.

Under-counter coolers and blocked airflow

Most built-in wine coolers breathe through a front grille at the toe kick. If that grille is blocked by a rug, dust or pet hair, the cooler struggles in summer and the compressor or fan runs constantly. Freestanding units pushed into a cabinet opening have the same problem from the back. A cooler kept in a hot garage or a sunny bonus room will rarely hold a steady temperature.

Clean the front grille, check that the door closes against a soft, even gasket, and give it a day after any temperature change. If it still drifts, the technician checks the fan, thermostat or sensor, controls and cooling system. Some thermoelectric models are better replaced than repaired, and we will say so. Dual-zone units get each zone tested separately, since one side can drift while the other holds.
