Whirlpool Microwaves: What We Check First

The over-the-range design includes a vent fan, a cooktop light, grease filters and a charcoal filter for recirculating installs. Inside, a magnetron, high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode generate the microwaves, and a set of door switches makes sure power is cut whenever the door opens.

Over-the-range units, and why not to open them

In newer subdivisions, the microwave usually hangs above the range and also handles ventilation and the cooktop light. That means a failure affects more than reheating: a dead vent fan leaves cooking steam and grease in the kitchen, and a faulty door switch can blow the internal fuse each time the door closes. Grease-loaded filters underneath also make the fan run hot.

You can safely check the breaker, try a different power level, and remove and clean the grease filters. Do not open the cabinet. A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that can stay charged after the unit is unplugged, and that work belongs to a technician.
