Do not force it, because that can strip the gears in the drawer mechanism. Turn the breaker off for a minute and try again, and check that nothing inside is wedged against the top. If it still will not move, the drawer motor or its control needs testing.

They look like part of the oven stack, so owners sometimes do not realize how different the inside is. A microwave stores high voltage in its capacitor even when unplugged, which is why this appliance is not one for home repair.

Over-the-range units, and why not to open them

In newer subdivisions, the microwave usually hangs above the range and also handles ventilation and the cooktop light. That means a failure affects more than reheating: a dead vent fan leaves cooking steam and grease in the kitchen, and a faulty door switch can blow the internal fuse each time the door closes. Grease-loaded filters underneath also make the fan run hot.

You can safely check the breaker, try a different power level, and remove and clean the grease filters. Do not open the cabinet. A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that can stay charged after the unit is unplugged, and that work belongs to a technician.
