Those ducts get crushed, disconnected or packed with lint, and sometimes they end in the crawl space itself, which puts warm, damp air where it does not belong. A dryer working against that restriction runs hot and slow.

Clean the lint screen, then check that the outside vent flap opens and blows air while the dryer runs. If you cannot find where the vent exits, mention that when you book. With a gas dryer, a gas smell means leaving the house and calling the gas utility before anything else.
