Roper Dryers: What We Check First

Roper dryers are built on Whirlpool's long-running 29-inch platform, one of the most widely serviced dryer designs in the country. A single motor turns the drum by a belt and spins the blower wheel directly. Electric models use a coil heating element with a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cutoff on the heater housing, plus a thermal fuse on the blower housing. Gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils.

Vents that run under the house

Dryers in mill-village houses and other crawl-space homes often push their exhaust down through the floor and along a duct under the house to an outside opening. Those ducts get crushed, disconnected or packed with lint, and sometimes they end in the crawl space itself, which puts warm, damp air where it does not belong. A dryer working against that restriction runs hot and slow.

Clean the lint screen, then check that the outside vent flap opens and blows air while the dryer runs. If you cannot find where the vent exits, mention that when you book. With a gas dryer, a gas smell means leaving the house and calling the gas utility before anything else.

What the technician tests

We test the heating element or gas valve coils and igniter, the thermal fuse, thermostats, belt and rollers, then explain the repair and price.
