Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

Should I add a drain pan under the upstairs washer in my Indian Land home?

It is a good idea, especially if the pan's outlet can be piped to a drain. A pan will not stop a burst hose, but it catches slow drips and small overflows before they reach the ceiling below. We can point out whether yours is in place and draining correctly.
