Roper Dryers: What We Check First

Roper dryers are built on Whirlpool's long-running 29-inch platform, one of the most widely serviced dryer designs in the country. A single motor turns the drum by a belt and spins the blower wheel directly. Electric models use a coil heating element with a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cutoff on the heater housing, plus a thermal fuse on the blower housing. Gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils.

Vents under older houses

In many of Lancaster's older homes, the dryer vent drops through the floor and runs across the crawl space to an outside wall. Those runs can sag, separate at a joint or fill with lint at the low points. The result is a dryer that takes two cycles, runs hot to the touch or keeps blowing its thermal fuse.

A simple test: run the dryer on heat and check the vent cap outside for strong, warm airflow. If the flow is weak, the vent needs attention. Clean the lint screen with soap and water if dryer sheets have left a film on it.

Older electric dryers usually fail at the heating element, the thermal fuse, the cycling thermostat, the belt or the drum rollers. Those are ordinary parts, and the repair is often quicker than on a newer, computerized model.
