Switch off its breaker for a few minutes, then turn it back on to reset the control. If the display stays dark, the control board, a fuse on the board or the power supply may have been damaged. We test those before suggesting a part.

Maytag Ranges: What We Check First

Maytag has a long history with ranges, including the Gemini double-oven models that put a small upper oven above a larger lower one, an idea current Maytag double-oven ranges still carry. Today's freestanding and slide-in Maytag ranges are Whirlpool-platform designs with a Power Burner on gas cooktops, Power Preheat in the oven and electronic controls that run both cavities on double-oven models. On electric versions, everything draws from a single 240-volt supply that enters through a terminal block at the back.

Digital Controls and Glass Tops in Newer Homes

Toward Reedy Creek and the Mint Hill side, newer subdivisions and townhome communities often came with builder-package ranges: smooth glass tops, digital controls and sometimes convection. These ranges can fail in ways older stoves do not, such as a control board that locks up or goes dark after a summer storm surge, an oven that shows an error and refuses to heat, or a radiant element that cycles poorly. Apartments that have been updated around the Albemarle Road corridor have similar models in larger numbers.

A Reset, Then a Proper Diagnosis

Turn off the range's breaker for several minutes and restore it, which can clear a frozen display. Make sure the oven door closes fully, since a door sensor can block heating. For gas ranges, a smell of gas means leaving and calling the gas utility or 911. We test the control board, elements or igniters, sensor and fan, then give the diagnosis and price before replacing anything. If the range is still under warranty, we point that out.
