That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Freestanding Stoves in Established Neighborhoods

In established subdivisions and the townhomes and apartments near US-74, the stove is usually a freestanding electric or gas unit. On electric models, coils, receptacles and infinite switches wear first. Gas stoves tend to develop clogged burner ports, weak oven igniters or spark switches that stick after spills.

Rental properties in these towns often keep stoves running a long time between replacements. Landlords and property managers usually want the diagnosis before approving work, and tenants should check with them before booking a visit. Older units in long-term rentals may also have discontinued parts, which can tip the decision toward replacement.

What to Check and What Happens Next

Turn off the breaker or unplug the stove before removing a coil or drip pan. Confirm the oven is not on a delayed-start setting, and check that the anti-tip bracket is in place. For gas stoves, never adjust valves or lines, and leave and call the gas utility or 911 if you smell gas. We test and explain the price before any repair.
