My Roper dryer will not start at all. Could it be a fuse?

Yes. On many Roper and Whirlpool dryers, the thermal fuse is wired into the motor circuit, so a blown fuse stops the dryer completely. A failed door switch, start switch or broken belt switch can do the same. We test each in sequence to find the cause.

My upstairs dryer near Mountain Island Lake takes two cycles to dry. Is it the vent?

That is the most common cause with second-floor laundry, because the duct is longer and may end at a roof cap. We measure airflow and test the heating parts. If the vent is the problem, we tell you so it can be cleaned before the dryer overheats.

My dryer won't start after a power outage in Northwest Charlotte. What can I try?

Unplug it or switch off its breaker for several minutes to reset the control. Check that the door switch clicks when you close the door. If it still will not start, a control board, door switch or thermal fuse may be at fault, and we can test each one.

Roper Dryers: What We Check First

Roper dryers are built on Whirlpool's long-running 29-inch platform, one of the most widely serviced dryer designs in the country. A single motor turns the drum by a belt and spins the blower wheel directly. Electric models use a coil heating element with a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cutoff on the heater housing, plus a thermal fuse on the blower housing. Gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils.

Long Vents From Second-Floor Laundry Rooms

When the laundry room is upstairs, the dryer vent may travel through a wall cavity or attic to a roof cap or high side-wall hood. That longer route traps more lint, and roof caps can clog with debris from the wooded lots common near Mountain Island Lake. Restricted airflow makes the dryer run long, overheat and eventually blow its thermal fuse. Electronic dryers in newer homes can also be affected by storm-related power flickers, showing a blank panel or a cycle that will not start even though the drum and motor are fine.

What to Check and What We Do

Clean the lint screen, then go outside with the dryer running and confirm there is strong airflow at the vent. For a roof cap, do not climb up yourself; tell us instead. Unplug the dryer before moving it, and for gas models close the appliance valve. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility or 911. We test the fuse, thermostats, heater or igniter and control, and measure airflow so the repair holds.
