Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

Water from my upstairs washer is dripping through the ceiling in my Northlake-area home. What now?

Close both supply valves behind the washer and unplug it right away. Mop up and let the area dry. We can find whether the hose, pump, tub seal or door boot is leaking, and if ceiling drywall was damaged, that repair would go to a separate contractor.

Roper Washers: What We Check First

There are two generations of Roper top-loaders in local homes. Older machines use Whirlpool's direct-drive design, where a reversible motor connects to the transmission through a plastic-and-rubber coupler and the pump bolts to the motor. Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin. Knowing which one you have narrows the diagnosis immediately.

When an Upstairs Washer Leaks or Walks

In the two-story subdivisions toward Northlake and the lake, the washer often sits above a living room or kitchen. A split inlet hose, a cracked pump housing or a front-loader whose door boot has torn can send water through the ceiling before anyone notices. Machines that shake hard during spin can also walk across the floor and stretch their hoses. Braided supply hoses, a drain pan with a drain line and a level washer are the simplest protection. Older ranch homes along the Beatties Ford Road corridor and around Oakdale usually have laundry on the main floor, where drain pumps, lid switches and worn agitators are the more typical problems.
