Is it worth repairing a Smeg countertop microwave?

Usually not with an in-home visit. A countertop microwave costs relatively little to replace, and the diagnosis alone can be a large part of its value. We are glad to advise, but our repair work makes more sense on built-in Smeg combination ovens that are fitted into cabinetry.

My over-the-range microwave fan in a Northlake-area home is loud. Can you fix it?

Usually, yes. Clean the grease filters first, since heavy buildup strains the fan. If the noise continues, the fan motor or its mount is likely worn, and on many models we can replace it without removing the microwave from the wall.

The units we see are mostly built-in compact combination ovens that match Smeg wall ovens, combining a microwave with a grill element and sometimes convection. Smeg has also sold countertop microwaves styled like its retro small appliances in some markets, but those are usually not worth an in-home repair visit, and we will tell you that honestly.

Over-the-Range Fans and Storm-Sensitive Panels

Over-the-range microwaves are standard in the newer homes around Northlake and in many updated kitchens along the Beatties Ford Road corridor. Because they vent the cooktop, their fans run a lot and their grease filters load up quickly. A fan that grinds, slows or will not shut off is a common sign of a worn motor. Door switches and turntable motors also wear with daily use. Touch panels on these units can fail after a storm outage or surge, even when the microwave itself still has power, which happens more often on the wooded lots out this way.

Safe Steps and When to Call Us

Do not remove the microwave's cover, since the high-voltage capacitor can hold a charge long after unplugging. Reset its breaker, clean or replace the grease filters and check that the door closes firmly. If it still will not heat or the panel stays dark, we test the switches, fuse, fan, magnetron and control and give you the price before any repair.
