Why does only one side of my Smeg dual-fuel range work?

A dual-fuel range uses gas for the burners and electricity for the oven, so if the burners light but the oven is dead, the issue is usually on the electrical side: a tripped breaker, a failed element, a fan or the control. If the oven works and the burners will not light, the spark module or gas supply is the place to look. We test both.

My range in a Northlake-area home shows an error after every storm. What is going on?

Repeated power flickers can confuse or damage electronic controls. A breaker reset may clear the error, but if it keeps returning, the control board or power supply may be failing. A whole-house surge protector is worth considering in areas with frequent outages.

Depending on the model, they pair gas burners or an induction top with an electric multifunction convection oven, and the widest versions add a second oven. Under the hood, they combine the parts of a Smeg cooktop and a Smeg wall oven: spark ignition and burner valves above, and elements, a convection fan and a cooling fan below.

Electronic Ranges and Frequent Outages

Ranges in the newer homes out this way usually have glass tops, digital controls and often convection ovens. Those features make them more sensitive to the storm outages common on wooded lots, where power can drop and return several times. A blank display, an error that will not clear or an oven that refuses to heat after a storm are typical signs of a control that did not come back cleanly. Convection fans that grind, glass-top elements that stop cycling and oven sensors that drift are other common failures as these ranges age.

Resetting the Range and Getting It Diagnosed

Turn off the range's breaker for several minutes, then restore it to clear a locked control. Check that the oven door latches fully, since a door sensor can block heating. With a gas range, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 if you ever notice a gas odor. We test the control board, elements, sensor and fan, explain the cause and give the price. If the range is still under the manufacturer's warranty, we say so.
