Maytag Ranges: What We Check First

Maytag has a long history with ranges, including the Gemini double-oven models that put a small upper oven above a larger lower one, an idea current Maytag double-oven ranges still carry. Today's freestanding and slide-in Maytag ranges are Whirlpool-platform designs with a Power Burner on gas cooktops, Power Preheat in the oven and electronic controls that run both cavities on double-oven models. On electric versions, everything draws from a single 240-volt supply that enters through a terminal block at the back.

Electronic Ranges and Frequent Outages

Ranges in the newer homes out this way usually have glass tops, digital controls and often convection ovens. Those features make them more sensitive to the storm outages common on wooded lots, where power can drop and return several times. A blank display, an error that will not clear or an oven that refuses to heat after a storm are typical signs of a control that did not come back cleanly. Convection fans that grind, glass-top elements that stop cycling and oven sensors that drift are other common failures as these ranges age.

Resetting the Range and Getting It Diagnosed

Turn off the range's breaker for several minutes, then restore it to clear a locked control. Check that the oven door latches fully, since a door sensor can block heating. With a gas range, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 if you ever notice a gas odor. We test the control board, elements, sensor and fan, explain the cause and give the price. If the range is still under the manufacturer's warranty, we say so.
