LG cooktops come in three main forms: radiant electric glass tops, induction glass tops and sealed-burner gas. The radiant models often include dual and triple elements that switch between ring sizes, while the induction units use coils and power boards that regulate the magnetic field for each zone. Gas models use spark ignition and LG's UltraHeat high-output burners on some versions. Most are controlled by touch panels on the glass or front-mounted knobs.

New Cooktops on Older Circuits

Induction and electric smoothtop cooktops draw a lot of current and depend on clean, steady power. In a renovated older home, a cooktop added during a remodel may share a panel with circuits that were never upgraded. When storms cause flickers, the control board or touch panel can freeze or show errors. Cooling fans on induction models can also fail, triggering shutdowns.

Gas cooktops in older bungalows have their own issues: burner caps out of place, clogged ports and igniters that click constantly after a spill. Small kitchens mean the cooktop is used hard, and a burner that lights unevenly is worth fixing before it gets worse.

Reset the breaker for electric models and dry the burners on gas ones. A gas smell in the kitchen calls for leaving the house and contacting the gas utility or 911. The technician tests elements, coils, switches, igniters and controls, and tells you if a supply problem needs an electrician.
