Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin.
