Close the water supply valve behind or under the refrigerator if you can reach it, wipe up the water and report it to your landlord. The leak may be a cracked line, a loose fitting or a failed inlet valve. A technician can find which and replace the part.

Why does our townhome ice maker make small, hollow cubes?

Low water flow is the usual reason, most often from an overdue filter or a partly kinked supply line. Replace the filter and check the line behind the fridge. If the cubes stay small, the inlet valve may be weak and need testing.

Scotsman ice machines we see in the Charlotte area fall into three groups, and each is built differently. Prodigy cube machines freeze water on an evaporator and use hot gas to harvest. Nugget and flake machines freeze water inside a refrigerated cylinder, with a gear-driven auger pushing ice up and out through a head. Gourmet undercounter cubers spray water upward into cups to form clear, top-hat-shaped cubes. The first thing we do is identify which one you have.

Water Lines and Filters in Compact Kitchens

When a refrigerator has been pushed hard against the wall in a compact Pineville kitchen, the plastic or copper water line behind it can kink or crack, and the ice maker is the first thing to stop. Townhomes and apartments with owner-supplied refrigerators may also have a filter nobody has changed since move-in, which slows the fill until cubes come out small and hollow.

Other causes include a fill tube frozen solid, an ice maker shutoff arm left up, a failed inlet valve, and a freezer too warm to finish the cubes. A leak under the fridge, especially on vinyl or laminate floors in an upstairs apartment, deserves attention before it reaches a neighbor below.

Check the shutoff arm, replace an old filter and look for kinks once the fridge is pulled out. If water is pooling, close the supply valve. The technician tests the valve, ice maker module and freezer temperature, and quotes before any repair.
