Is it worth repairing a Smeg countertop microwave?

Usually not with an in-home visit. A countertop microwave costs relatively little to replace, and the diagnosis alone can be a large part of its value. We are glad to advise, but our repair work makes more sense on built-in Smeg combination ovens that are fitted into cabinetry.

Do you repair microwave drawers in larger SouthPark-area kitchens?

Yes. Drawer models fail at the drawer mechanism, the door switches or the control, and we diagnose them in place before deciding whether the unit has to come out. Because a drawer fits a specific cabinet opening, repair is often preferable to replacement.

The vent fan on my condo's over-the-range microwave is loud. Is that a repair?

It can be. First clean the grease filters, because heavy buildup strains the fan. If the noise continues, the fan motor or its mount is likely worn, and we can replace it with the unit still on the wall in many cases.

The units we see are mostly built-in compact combination ovens that match Smeg wall ovens, combining a microwave with a grill element and sometimes convection. Smeg has also sold countertop microwaves styled like its retro small appliances in some markets, but those are usually not worth an in-home repair visit, and we will tell you that honestly.

Over-the-Range Units and Built-In Drawers

Many updated Cotswold kitchens and SouthPark condos mount the microwave above the range, where it doubles as the vent hood. Grease-clogged filters, a fan that rattles, a turntable that stops and door switches that wear from daily use are common complaints. In larger homes, microwave drawers and built-in models set into a wall oven stack bring their own trim kits and mounting, so removal takes more planning. Power surges from summer storms can also leave a touch panel unresponsive while the rest of the kitchen seems fine.

What You Can Check and What You Should Not

A microwave stores high voltage in its capacitor even when unplugged, so never remove the outer cabinet. You can safely reset its breaker, make sure the door closes firmly and clean or replace the grease filters under an over-the-range unit. If it runs but does not heat, sparks, or the panel stays dead, book a visit.
