Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Older Freestanding Stoves in Ranch Kitchens

A freestanding stove that has served a Cotswold kitchen for years usually fails one part at a time. On electric models, a coil element burns out, its receptacle scorches or an infinite switch stops regulating heat, so a burner is either off or stuck on high. On gas stoves, burners that will not light or an oven that stays cold often trace to an igniter weakening with age. Some condos near the mall also have basic electric stoves supplied by the building, and the same parts wear out there.

Checking a Burner Safely and Planning the Repair

Turn off the breaker before lifting out a coil element, then swap it into a working burner position to see whether the element or the switch is at fault. Do not use a receptacle that looks burned. For gas stoves, never adjust the supply; if you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911. We test the elements, switches, igniter and oven sensor and tell you the price first.
