Instead of a glowing element, it uses copper coils beneath the glass and electronics that create a magnetic field. The pan heats directly, but the electronics generate heat of their own, so a cooling fan underneath keeps them within limits.

Glass Tops and Induction in Condo Kitchens

A smoothtop or induction cooktop set into a condo countertop has its electronics packed into a shallow space beneath the glass. An element that stays dark, one that heats only on high, or a touch panel that beeps and shuts down often traces to an infinite switch, a relay on the control board, or a cooling fan on an induction model. Surges from summer storms can also scramble touch controls.

Before calling, switch the cooktop's breaker off for a few minutes and back on, and make sure the glass is dry and clear of pans when you press the controls. Induction surfaces also need cookware that a magnet sticks to. If the glass is cracked, stop using the cooktop entirely.

In the ward townhomes with gas cooktops, a burner that clicks without lighting usually needs its cap seated properly or its igniter tested. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility or 911. Our technician tests each part and gives you the price first.
