Why is only one of my JennAir column units warm?

Column refrigerators and freezers are separate appliances with their own sealed systems and controls. A fault in one does not affect the other, so the warm cabinet needs its own diagnosis. Fans, sensors and condenser airflow are the first things we check.

Our Stallings garage fridge struggles every summer. Is it broken?

Maybe not. A hot Union County garage pushes many indoor-rated refrigerators beyond the conditions they were built for, so they fall behind in the hottest weeks. JennAir Refrigerators: What We Check First

Most JennAir refrigerators we open in Charlotte are built-ins or column units, and they behave differently from a standard freestanding fridge. On many built-in models the compressor and condenser live at the top of the cabinet behind a grille, with the evaporator and fans down in the fresh food and freezer sections. Column units split refrigeration into separate cabinets, each with its own sealed system and electronics, so one side can fail while the other runs perfectly.

Builder-Package Fridges Reaching Middle Age

Subdivisions along US-74 and Old Monroe Road went up over a short span of years, so a lot of the refrigerators here are similar in age and style: side-by-side or French-door models with through-the-door water and ice. Once they pass their first decade, the usual complaints are a fresh-food section that drifts warm, frost behind the freezer panel from a defrost fault, and dispensers that drip or quit.

A safe first look takes a few minutes. Pull the kick plate, unplug the unit and vacuum the condenser coils, which collect spring pollen and pet hair faster than most owners realize. Then check that the door gaskets seal along their full length, since humid summer air sneaking past a tired gasket causes sweating and frost.

Plenty of houses here also keep a second refrigerator in the attached garage. In July that garage can run well past the temperature range a standard model is designed for, so a fridge out there may run nonstop or let food warm up.
