How often should I defrost the freezer section of my Smeg retro fridge?

On models with a manual-defrost ice box or freezer compartment, defrost whenever the frost gets to roughly a quarter inch thick, which may be every few months in humid weather. Unplug the fridge, empty the compartment and let the ice melt on its own. Never chip at it with a knife, since puncturing the evaporator ends the fridge's working life.

Our Stallings garage fridge struggles every summer. Is it broken?
