Often, yes. Sparking is commonly caused by a burned or greasy waveguide cover, which is an inexpensive part, or by metal left inside. Stop using it until it is checked. We will tell you if the magnetron or cavity has been damaged.

Miele Microwaves: What We Check First

Miele microwaves are built-in units designed to sit in a wall of matching ovens, along with speed ovens that combine microwave and convection heating in one cavity. They have a glass tray or flat floor, sensor cooking programs and, on many models, M Touch controls. Because they are installed in cabinetry and match other Miele appliances, replacing one is rarely a simple swap. Some speed ovens also offer a grill element for browning, which adds another heating circuit to test.

When a Mounted Microwave Is Worth Fixing

Countertop microwaves are inexpensive enough that most owners replace them, but over-the-range models are another story because they also serve as the vent hood and are bolted above the range. In Wingate rentals, door latches and switches wear out from being slammed, and turntables crack. In older Monroe kitchens, the microwave may share a circuit with other appliances, so trips and resets are common.

A blank display after a storm or outage can be just a tripped breaker. Reset it once. If the microwave sparks, stop using it; food splatter or a damaged waveguide cover is a frequent cause. Never take the cover off, because the capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.
