Microwave drawers in islands use a motorized opening mechanism, so in addition to heating faults they can fail with a drawer that will not open, closes partway or stops responding to the touch panel. Built-in units with trim kits and microwave-oven combinations are tied into the cabinetry, which changes how they are removed and serviced.

A dead microwave after a summer storm sometimes just needs its power reset. Check the breaker, and if the unit has its own outlet in a cabinet, make sure it is still live. Do not open the housing: the high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge long after the plug is pulled.
