Inside, both types use the same core parts: a magnetron to produce microwave energy, a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode to power it, a set of door interlock switches, and a control board with a touch panel. These parts are compact and inexpensive, but the high-voltage section is dangerous even after the unit is unplugged.

Microwave Drawers, Trim Kits and Combo Stacks

Larger kitchens often move the microwave out of sight. Microwave drawers in islands use a motorized opening mechanism, so in addition to heating faults they can fail with a drawer that will not open, closes partway or stops responding to the touch panel. Built-in units with trim kits and microwave-oven combinations are tied into the cabinetry, which changes how they are removed and serviced.

A dead microwave after a summer storm sometimes just needs its power reset. Check the breaker, and if the unit has its own outlet in a cabinet, make sure it is still live. Do not open the housing: the high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge long after the plug is pulled.
