Why does my Thor gas oven smell like gas for a moment when it starts?

A brief, faint smell at ignition can happen as gas reaches the burner, but if it lasts or grows stronger the ignition may be slow and letting gas build up. Turn the oven off. If the smell is strong, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside, then have the ignition tested.

The flames on our Polkton propane stove are yellow and uneven. Is that dangerous?

Yellow, lazy flames mean the burner is not burning cleanly, often because of clogged ports or a cap out of place. Clean and reseat the burner with everything off. If the flames stay yellow, stop using that burner and have it checked, and call your propane supplier if you smell gas.

Can you replace a burned coil socket on an old electric stove in Peachland?

It is the model that built Thor's reputation, and its weak points are well known. The steel and cast iron rarely give trouble, while the ignition parts on both the cooktop and in the oven carry most of the wear.

Propane and Electric Stoves in the Country

Rural homes here typically cook on an electric stove or one running on propane from a tank on the property. Electric coil stoves tend to lose a burner to a burned socket or terminal, or a switch that leaves a burner stuck on high. Propane stoves show weak or yellow flames from clogged ports, igniters that spark without lighting, and burners that are slow to catch.

With the stove off and cool, swap a dead coil burner with a working one of the same size to see whether the fault moves. On gas, clean and dry the caps and burner heads. Leave the regulator, tank and fittings to your propane supplier, and if you smell gas, leave the home and call them or 911.
