Why does my Everest freezer door stick shut and then tear the gasket?

Freezers use a small heater in the door frame to stop the gasket from freezing to the cabinet. If that heater fails, the gasket bonds to the frame and tears when the door is yanked open. Replacing the gasket without fixing the heater only leads to another tear.

My garage freezer in Harrisburg stopped after a storm. Could it just be the outlet?

Quite possibly. Garage outlets are often GFCI-protected and can trip during a storm, so check and reset it first. If the freezer still will not run, keep it closed and call us so we can test the start components and controls.

Everest Freezers: What We Check First

An Everest reach-in freezer has to manage something a cooler barely deals with: ice on the evaporator coil. Every door opening brings in humid kitchen air, the moisture freezes onto the fins, and several times a day the freezer pauses cooling, energizes a defrost heater to clear the coil, and sends the water down a heated drain. A termination control ends the heat once the coil is clean.

Garage freezers through a Cabarrus County summer

Stand-alone freezers in garages here face long stretches of heat and humidity. Many are built for a limited ambient range, so in a hot garage the compressor runs nearly nonstop, frost piles up on the walls of a manual-defrost chest unit, and the lid or door gasket stops sealing as it stiffens. Dust and pollen drawn in through an open garage door also coat the condenser.

If a freezer is warming, keep it closed, confirm the outlet works and check whether a GFCI outlet in the garage has tripped. Thunderstorms can trip those without anyone noticing. Brush or vacuum the condenser area and give the unit a few inches of space on all sides.

On the visit, the technician checks the start relay, fans, thermostat or control, defrost parts on frost-free models and the gasket, and looks at whether the sealed system is holding. Smaller parts are usually a reasonable repair; a leak in the sealed system on an older chest freezer often is not, and we will say so.
