My Roper dryer will not start at all. Could it be a fuse?

Yes. On many Roper and Whirlpool dryers, the thermal fuse is wired into the motor circuit, so a blown fuse stops the dryer completely. A failed door switch, start switch or broken belt switch can do the same. We test each in sequence to find the cause.

Can you clean the roof vent on my Concord dryer, or only fix the dryer?

Roper Dryers: What We Check First

Roper dryers are built on Whirlpool's long-running 29-inch platform, one of the most widely serviced dryer designs in the country. A single motor turns the drum by a belt and spins the blower wheel directly. Electric models use a coil heating element with a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cutoff on the heater housing, plus a thermal fuse on the blower housing. Gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils.

Long vent runs, pollen and lint

Newer two-story houses usually put the dryer on the second floor with a vent that runs up through the attic or across to a side wall. Every extra foot and every bend lets lint settle, and spring pine pollen can coat the outside flap. When airflow drops, the dryer heats the same air over and over, cycles on its high-limit thermostat and eventually blows a thermal fuse.

A safe first check: with the dryer running, step outside and feel for strong air at the vent hood. Clean the lint screen and look for a kinked foil duct behind the machine. With a gas dryer, if you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 before anything else.

The technician tests heating elements or gas igniters and valve coils, thermal fuses, belts, rollers and the moisture sensor, and measures airflow at the dryer.
