Usually it is a water supply problem, often a clogged inlet valve or filter from well sediment. Replace the filter first. If cubes stay small, we test and replace the valve.

Scotsman Ice Makers: What We Check First

Scotsman ice machines we see in the Charlotte area fall into three groups, and each is built differently. Prodigy cube machines freeze water on an evaporator and use hot gas to harvest. Nugget and flake machines freeze water inside a refrigerated cylinder, with a gear-driven auger pushing ice up and out through a head. Gourmet undercounter cubers spray water upward into cups to form clear, top-hat-shaped cubes. The first thing we do is identify which one you have.

Sediment in a small valve

The water valve that feeds an ice maker has tiny passages and a fine screen, and well sediment clogs it faster than almost anything else in the house. The result is small, hollow or misshapen cubes, a dispenser that sputters, or no ice at all. Iron can discolor ice and stain the tray, and a clogged refrigerator filter adds to the restriction.

Replace the refrigerator's water filter if it has been in place a while, and check that the supply valve is fully open. If you have a whole-house filter on the well, see whether it needs changing too. After a power outage that stopped the well pump, air in the line can make the dispenser sputter for a while before it clears.

We test and replace the inlet valve, check the ice maker module and fill tube, and confirm the freezer is cold enough. Then we give you the price before work, and suggest filtration if sediment keeps clogging new parts. Midland is usually simpler to schedule than the far side of Mount Pleasant.
