My Whirlpool washer stops with the lid locked. Why?

The washer locks the lid during agitation and spin. If the lock motor or switch fails to report properly, the washer stops and may show a lid lock code. We test the lock and its wiring and replace the part that failed.

Whirlpool Washers: What We Check First

Most current top-loaders lock the lid during agitation and spin, use a shifter to switch between wash and spin, and rely on a drive coupling or belt between the motor and the gearcase. Front-loaders use a horizontal drum, a door lock, a rubber boot and a drain pump with a filter on many models.

Sediment, iron and the inlet valve

A washer on a private well pulls in whatever the well delivers, including fine sand, sediment and iron. That material collects in the small screens inside the hose connections and the inlet valve, so the machine fills slowly, stops with a fill error or never reaches the right water level. Iron can also leave orange stains on the tub and clothes. After well work or a pump replacement, a burst of sediment can clog things all at once.

Turn off both water valves and unplug the washer before checking anything. Unscrew the fill hoses and look at the screens where they attach to the machine. If the hoses are original rubber, replacing them with braided lines is a sensible precaution, especially in a utility room off the garage where a leak might go unseen.
