Earlier models used a self-cleaning design with a grinder that chopped food particles. The newer filters run quieter and save energy, but they rely on the owner to clean them, and many owners have never been told. A wash motor drives the spray arms, a separate drain pump removes water, and a heating element warms the water and helps drying.

Well water inside the dishwasher

A dishwasher fills through a small inlet valve with a fine screen, and on well water that screen can clog with sediment until the machine underfills and cleans poorly. Iron leaves orange or brown stains on racks and the tub, and minerals form a film on glasses. Over time, grit wears the valve seat and the wash pump seal, which can lead to leaks around the base.

Clean the filter in the bottom of the tub and check the spray arms for blocked holes. If the house loses water when the well pump loses power, a dishwasher that was mid-cycle may show an error afterward; reset it at the breaker and run a short cycle. If water appears under the door, turn off the supply and power.
