That behavior often means the anti-flood protection has tripped because water has reached the tray in the base. Something is leaking, whether a hose, a seal or suds from the wrong detergent. The leak needs to be found and fixed, and the tray dried, before the machine will run normally again.

Many models also include anti-flood protection: a tray in the base with a float switch that shuts the machine down and runs the drain pump if water collects there.

Well water inside the dishwasher

A dishwasher fills through a small inlet valve with a fine screen, and on well water that screen can clog with sediment until the machine underfills and cleans poorly. Iron leaves orange or brown stains on racks and the tub, and minerals form a film on glasses. Over time, grit wears the valve seat and the wash pump seal, which can lead to leaks around the base.

Clean the filter in the bottom of the tub and check the spray arms for blocked holes. If the house loses water when the well pump loses power, a dishwasher that was mid-cycle may show an error afterward; reset it at the breaker and run a short cycle. If water appears under the door, turn off the supply and power.
