How do I clean the filters in my Maytag dishwasher?

Remove the lower rack, twist out the lower filter and lift out the upper filter. Rinse both under warm water with a soft brush, then reinstall them firmly. Doing this every month or so prevents many problems.

Under the badge they are Whirlpool-platform machines: a wash motor driving lower and upper spray arms, a separate drain pump, a heating element, a water inlet valve and a door latch with switches that tell the control the door is sealed. Some Maytag models add a stainless steel tub and a third rack, and older pre-acquisition Maytag dishwashers use completely different parts.

Well water inside the dishwasher

A dishwasher fills through a small inlet valve with a fine screen, and on well water that screen can clog with sediment until the machine underfills and cleans poorly. Iron leaves orange or brown stains on racks and the tub, and minerals form a film on glasses. Over time, grit wears the valve seat and the wash pump seal, which can lead to leaks around the base.

Clean the filter in the bottom of the tub and check the spray arms for blocked holes. If the house loses water when the well pump loses power, a dishwasher that was mid-cycle may show an error afterward; reset it at the breaker and run a short cycle. If water appears under the door, turn off the supply and power.
