Why does my Thermador dishwasher stop and won't drain or start?

Often water has reached the base pan and triggered the float switch. That shuts the cycle down to prevent flooding. We find the source of the leak, dry the base and reset the system.

My Indian Land dishwasher shut off and the base has a little water in it. What happened?

Many dishwashers have a float or leak sensor in the base that stops the machine when it detects water. The water may come from a door seal, a hose or an over-sudsing detergent. We locate the leak, fix it and reset the sensor.

Thermador Dishwashers: What We Check First

Thermador dishwashers, including the Star Sapphire and related lines, are built on the same BSH engineering platform as Bosch dishwashers. They use a cylindrical filter in the base, a drain pump below a small cover, a circulation pump with an integrated flow-through heater, and a leak protection system with a float switch in the base pan. Many models offer StarDry, which uses a mineral called zeolite to help dry dishes, and third-rack cutlery storage.

Island dishwashers and hidden leaks

A dishwasher installed in an island runs its drain and supply lines through the floor or across the cabinet base to the sink. Those long runs can kink, and a slow drip from the door or a loose connection may go unnoticed until the cabinet floor swells or a musty smell appears. If you notice soft toe-kick trim or damp flooring, cut power at the breaker and close the valve under the sink.

Inside the tub, most newer models use a manual filter that needs regular rinsing. When it clogs, the dishwasher leaves a gritty film, drains slowly or sits with water after the cycle. Twist the filter out, rinse it and check the sump below for glass, seeds or labels.

Diagnosis and repair

If cleaning the filter does not help, the technician tests the drain pump, the circulation motor, the inlet valve, the heater and the controls. On models with a leak sensor in the base, a small amount of water can shut the machine down, so we find and fix the source before resetting it.
