Why does my Thermador dishwasher stop and won't drain or start?

Often water has reached the base pan and triggered the float switch. That shuts the cycle down to prevent flooding. We find the source of the leak, dry the base and reset the system.

There's orange residue in my Lancaster dishwasher. Is it broken?

Thermador Dishwashers: What We Check First

Thermador dishwashers, including the Star Sapphire and related lines, are built on the same BSH engineering platform as Bosch dishwashers. They use a cylindrical filter in the base, a drain pump below a small cover, a circulation pump with an integrated flow-through heater, and a leak protection system with a float switch in the base pan. Many models offer StarDry, which uses a mineral called zeolite to help dry dishes, and third-rack cutlery storage.

Iron, sediment and spray arms

On private wells around Lancaster, sediment and iron clog the dishwasher's inlet valve screen and build up inside the spray arms. A slow fill, weak spray, gritty dishes or orange-brown residue in the tub are typical signs. Remove the spray arms and rinse their holes, clean the filter at the bottom of the tub and keep any whole-house sediment filter on its change schedule.

In older in-town homes, the dishwasher may have been added to a kitchen that was never designed for one. Long drain runs to the sink, aging supply lines and installs that are not quite level lead to door leaks, slow draining and water left standing in the tub.
