Electric versions use coil or radiant elements controlled by infinite switches, while gas versions use sealed burners with spark ignition. Because they are designed for narrow countertops, the space underneath is tight, and heat from the burners has less room to dissipate.

Each type fails differently: coils and their receptacles burn, glass tops develop dead elements or failing infinite switches, gas burners click or will not light, and induction units lose power boards or cooling fans.

Storm-related surges hit electronic touch controls harder than older knob-type controls, so a glass or induction top that is dead after a thunderstorm deserves a breaker reset before anything else is assumed. Older knob controls rarely suffer that way, though their switches still wear with daily use.
