Swapping a plug-in coil is simple with the breaker off and the burner cold, as long as the receptacle is undamaged. If the receptacle is scorched or melted, a new coil alone will not fix it and may be damaged quickly. That repair is better left to a technician.

Our Mint Hill induction cooktop went dead after a storm. What should we check?

Turn off its breaker for a minute, then restore it. If the controls still do not respond, the power board or an internal fuse may have failed. A technician can test it and price the repair.

Roper Cooktops: What We Check First

Standalone Roper cooktops are not common, so most surface-burner work on Roper equipment involves the top of a Roper range. Electric Ropers almost always use plug-in coil elements set in drip pans, each controlled by an infinite switch that cycles power on and off. Older built-in cooktops with the Roper badge follow the same design. Because each burner is its own circuit, a failure is usually limited to one position.

Mixed Kitchens, Mixed Cooktops

Homes from earlier decades often started with an electric coil cooktop, and many have since moved to smooth glass or induction. Others switched to gas where a line was available. Each type fails differently: coils and their receptacles burn, glass tops develop dead elements or failing infinite switches, gas burners click or will not light, and induction units lose power boards or cooling fans.

Storm-related surges hit electronic touch controls harder than older knob-type controls, so a glass or induction top that is dead after a thunderstorm deserves a breaker reset before anything else is assumed. Older knob controls rarely suffer that way, though their switches still wear with daily use.

Safe Checks and the Visit

Switch off the breaker before any cleaning or inspection of an electric cooktop. Do not use a cracked glass surface. On gas units, make sure caps sit flat and burner bases are dry, but never adjust valves or connections. A gas smell means leaving the house and calling the gas utility or 911.
