Storm-related surges hit electronic touch controls harder than older knob-type controls, so a glass or induction top that is dead after a thunderstorm deserves a breaker reset before anything else is assumed. Older knob controls rarely suffer that way, though their switches still wear with daily use.

On gas units, make sure caps sit flat and burner bases are dry, but never adjust valves or connections. A gas smell means leaving the house and calling the gas utility or 911.
