My Hotpoint washer agitates but won't spin. What usually causes that?

On GE-platform Hotpoint top-loaders, the usual suspects are the lid switch or lid lock, the shift actuator, or a stripped basket drive hub. A drain problem can also stop spin because the machine waits for the water to leave. We test each of these before recommending a part.

My washer is in a shed behind my Plaza Midwood bungalow. Will freezing weather hurt it?

It can. Water left in the hoses, pump or valve can freeze and crack them during an ice storm or cold snap. Shut the supply valves and disconnect the hoses before a hard freeze, and let us know if you see leaks afterward.

Why does water overflow from the drain standpipe behind my NoDa washer?

Older standpipes may be too short, too narrow or partly clogged for a modern washer's fast pump-out. The drain line itself is a plumbing issue, but we can confirm whether the washer's pump and hose are working correctly.

Hotpoint Washers: What We Check First

Hotpoint washers are almost all top-loaders, and current models share their mechanical design with GE's basic top-load line. A motor drives the agitator and basket through a transmission, and a small electric shift actuator moves the transmission between agitate and spin. Older Hotpoint machines used a belt-driven layout instead. Both designs are simple to work on, but each has a short list of parts that wear predictably.

Laundry on Porches, in Closets and in Sheds

Washers on enclosed porches or in sheds behind NoDa and Plaza Midwood homes sit in spaces that get hot and humid in summer and cold in a winter freeze.
