Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

My washer is in a shed behind my Plaza Midwood bungalow. Will freezing weather hurt it?

It can. Water left in the hoses, pump or valve can freeze and crack them during an ice storm or cold snap. Shut the supply valves and disconnect the hoses before a hard freeze, and let us know if you see leaks afterward.

Why does water overflow from the drain standpipe behind my NoDa washer?

Older standpipes may be too short, too narrow or partly clogged for a modern washer's fast pump-out. The drain line itself is a plumbing issue, but we can confirm whether the washer's pump and hose are working correctly.

Roper Washers: What We Check First

There are two generations of Roper top-loaders in local homes. Older machines use Whirlpool's direct-drive design, where a reversible motor connects to the transmission through a plastic-and-rubber coupler and the pump bolts to the motor. Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin. Knowing which one you have narrows the diagnosis immediately.

Laundry on Porches, in Closets and in Sheds

Washers on enclosed porches or in sheds behind NoDa and Plaza Midwood homes sit in spaces that get hot and humid in summer and cold in a winter freeze.
