Upright frost-free freezers use an evaporator with a fan and automatic defrost behind the rear panel, while refrigerator freezers share the cooling system with the fresh-food side. Both rely on a compressor with a start relay and an overload, and a condenser near the bottom of the unit.

Porch and Shed Freezers

Older homes here have little indoor storage, so extra freezers end up on enclosed porches, in sheds or in detached garages. Those spaces swing from very hot in summer to near freezing in an ice storm, and many freezers are designed for a narrower range. Heat makes the compressor run nonstop, while cold can make some models stop cycling altogether, letting food thaw.

Brush dust from the coils with the freezer unplugged, keep it out of direct sun and check the lid or door seal. Move food to a cooler while you wait for the visit. If the unit is very old and the compressor has failed, repair may cost a large share of a new freezer.
