Only one of my Gaggenau Vario modules stopped working. Is the whole cooktop failing?

Usually not. Vario modules are individual appliances with their own controls and often their own circuit, so one can fail while the rest work normally. Checking the breaker first is worthwhile, and a technician can then test that module on its own.

The touch controls on our Steele Creek cooktop stopped responding. What should we try?

Wipe the control area dry, since moisture or a pot resting on the panel can block the touch sensors, and check whether a lock mode is on. Then reset the breaker once. If the controls still do not respond, the touch board or main control needs testing.

Our hot-surface light stays on even when the cooktop is cold. Is that a problem?

It is a fault worth fixing, because the light is a safety indicator. The cause is usually a failing sensor, relay or control board. Switch the cooktop off at the breaker if any element seems to be heating on its own.

The Vario system lets designers line up separate modules in the counter: gas burners, a high-output wok, induction zones, a Teppan Yaki griddle, an electric grill, a fryer or a steamer, sometimes alongside a downdraft vent module. Each piece has its own controls and electrical supply, and Gaggenau also makes larger single induction and gas cooktops. The first job on any visit is working out which module is faulty and how it is powered.

Smooth-Top and Gas Cooktops in Newer Floor Plans

Larger floor plans in Steele Creek's newer subdivisions sometimes trade a range for a counter cooktop paired with a wall oven, while most homes have the cooktop as the top of a slide-in or freestanding range. Either way, the surface is usually glass with radiant elements and electronic controls, or sealed gas burners with electronic ignition.

Radiant elements can stop heating or stay on, touch controls can lock up after spills or a power surge, and a hot-surface light may stay lit because of a failing sensor or relay. On gas tops, spark igniters soaked by boil-overs click without lighting. Glass surfaces also crack from impact, and a cracked top should not be used.

Let the surface cool, clean it with cooktop cream, and check whether a control lock is engaged. If you notice a gas odor, leave and call the gas utility or 911. We test elements, switches and controls, price the repair first, and mention it if warranty coverage looks likely.
