Can I replace a Roper coil element myself?

Swapping a plug-in coil is simple with the breaker off and the burner cold, as long as the receptacle is undamaged. If the receptacle is scorched or melted, a new coil alone will not fix it and may be damaged quickly. That repair is better left to a technician.

The touch controls on our Steele Creek cooktop stopped responding. What should we try?

Wipe the control area dry, since moisture or a pot resting on the panel can block the touch sensors, and check whether a lock mode is on. Then reset the breaker once. If the controls still do not respond, the touch board or main control needs testing.

Our hot-surface light stays on even when the cooktop is cold. Is that a problem?

It is a fault worth fixing, because the light is a safety indicator. The cause is usually a failing sensor, relay or control board. Switch the cooktop off at the breaker if any element seems to be heating on its own.

Roper Cooktops: What We Check First

Standalone Roper cooktops are not common, so most surface-burner work on Roper equipment involves the top of a Roper range. Electric Ropers almost always use plug-in coil elements set in drip pans, each controlled by an infinite switch that cycles power on and off. Older built-in cooktops with the Roper badge follow the same design. Because each burner is its own circuit, a failure is usually limited to one position.

Smooth-Top and Gas Cooktops in Newer Floor Plans

Larger floor plans in Steele Creek's newer subdivisions sometimes trade a range for a counter cooktop paired with a wall oven, while most homes have the cooktop as the top of a slide-in or freestanding range.
