My Viking stove's oven igniter glows but the oven won't light. Why?

That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

Can you replace a scorched burner receptacle on an older stove in my west-side duplex?

Yes. A scorched receptacle is a common, inexpensive repair, and we usually replace the matching element at the same time because a damaged element often caused the burn. Keep that burner off and the breaker off until the repair is done.

Do you repair basic gas stoves in older West Charlotte rentals?

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Basic Stoves That Have Seen Heavy Use

In duplexes and older rental homes off Freedom Drive and Wilkinson Boulevard, the stove is often a simple electric coil model or a basic gas unit with standing burners and a single oven. Those stoves are durable, but the knobs crack, coil receptacles scorch, oven door hinges sag and the bake element eventually burns out. On gas units, slow oven ignition and burners that light unevenly are the usual signs of wear. Because these designs are common, most parts are easy to get, and a repair often costs far less than buying and delivering a new stove.

Before the Visit and During It

Turn off the breaker before inspecting an element, and do not use a burner whose receptacle is blackened or loose. For gas stoves, never adjust the supply connection, and if you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility or 911. When the technician arrives, we test each burner, the oven heating part and the switches, then give the owner the diagnosis and price for approval.
