Kenmore Dryers: What We Check First

Most Kenmore dryers were built by Whirlpool and carry the 110 model prefix. LG-built units use 796, and some Frigidaire-built front-load pairs use 417. Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers use a familiar design with a drum supported by rollers, a belt and idler pulley, a heating element or gas burner, and a set of thermostats and a thermal fuse that protect against overheating. Many of those Whirlpool-built 110 dryers share parts with Whirlpool, Maytag and Roper models of the same era, which keeps them easy to supply.

  • Thermal fuse blown by a clogged or crushed vent
  • Drum rollers and idler pulley worn, causing thumping
  • Gas valve coils weakening, so the burner will not relight
  • Heating element burned out on electric Whirlpool-built models

The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our Kenmore dryer repair guide.

Dust, pollen and long drying times

Homes on rural roads around Oakboro and Stanfield see plenty of field dust and spring pollen, and both end up in dryer vents and on outside flaps. Two-story houses in Locust subdivisions often have long vent runs that collect lint along the way. In either setting, poor airflow makes drying slow and can trip the thermal fuse, so the dryer runs without heat.

With the dryer running, check for strong airflow at the outside vent. Clean the lint screen and look for a crushed duct behind the dryer. If you have a propane dryer and smell gas, turn it off, leave and call your propane supplier or 911.

We test the heating element or igniter and gas valve, thermal fuse, thermostats, belt and rollers, and check the vent. Since visits may be grouped on route days at this edge of our area, the dryer's model number at booking helps us bring the right parts.
