My Hotpoint washer agitates but won't spin. What usually causes that?

Hotpoint Washers: What We Check First

Hotpoint washers are almost all top-loaders, and current models share their mechanical design with GE's basic top-load line. A motor drives the agitator and basket through a transmission, and a small electric shift actuator moves the transmission between agitate and spin. Older Hotpoint machines used a belt-driven layout instead. Both designs are simple to work on, but each has a short list of parts that wear predictably.

Overloaded machines and aging connections

Washers in student and workforce rentals take a beating. Overstuffed loads wear suspension rods, tub bearings and lid switches, and coins or hair ties in pockets end up in the drain pump. A top-loader that bangs during spin or a machine that stops with water in it often tells that story, and those are usually reasonable repairs on a common model.

Older houses near downtown add another variable: the plumbing behind the machine. Original shutoff valves can seize or weep, and rubber fill hoses may be many years old. Before any repair, we look at what the washer connects to, because a new pump will not help if the valve behind it is leaking onto the floor.

Front-loaders in the newer subdivisions

Away from the center, many homes have front-load washers in second-floor laundry rooms. In this humidity, the door boot and dispenser drawer grow mildew quickly unless they are dried after use. If yours smells or shows black spots, wipe the boot, run a cleaning cycle and leave the door open. Leaks, error codes and drain faults are the point to call, and we quote the fix before starting.
