Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

Our Rock Hill rental washer keeps getting overloaded. Is it worth repairing again?

Roper Washers: What We Check First

There are two generations of Roper top-loaders in local homes. Older machines use Whirlpool's direct-drive design, where a reversible motor connects to the transmission through a plastic-and-rubber coupler and the pump bolts to the motor. Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin. Knowing which one you have narrows the diagnosis immediately.

Overloaded machines and aging connections

Washers in student and workforce rentals take a beating. Overstuffed loads wear suspension rods, tub bearings and lid switches, and coins or hair ties in pockets end up in the drain pump. A top-loader that bangs during spin or a machine that stops with water in it often tells that story, and those are usually reasonable repairs on a common model.

Older houses near downtown add another variable: the plumbing behind the machine. Original shutoff valves can seize or weep, and rubber fill hoses may be many years old. Before any repair, we look at what the washer connects to, because a new pump will not help if the valve behind it is leaking onto the floor.

Front-loaders in the newer subdivisions

Away from the center, many homes have front-load washers in second-floor laundry rooms. In this humidity, the door boot and dispenser drawer grow mildew quickly unless they are dried after use.
